TGIF June 29, 2007!

TGI Friday! I have uploaded a new show to my podcast this week.

Author Pierette Simpson joins Rosi Stewart today on Writers in the Sky to discuss her book Alive on the Andrea Doria! The Greatest Sea Rescue in History.

In 1956, Piera Domenica Burzio and her grandparents left their village of Pranzalito, near Torino in Italy, to begin a new life in America. They made their journey on the last voyage of the Andrea Doria. Pierette and her grandparents survived the collision, when the Swedish liner Stockholm rammed the Italian luxury liner.

The family settled in Detroit, Michigan, where Pierette attended Wayne State University. She received a liberal arts degree, with a teaching certificate in French, Spanish, and Social Studies. She continued her education by doing graduate work in Paris and Angers, France.

Click here to listen to Part 1...

Pierette continued to pursue her love of foreign languages by teaching high school French and Spanish in the Farmington Public Schools, near Detroit. In the course of her twenty-six-year teaching career, she was recognized as Michigan Foreign Language Teacher of the Year (1994-95) by the Michigan Foreign Language Association. Upon her retirement, she was inducted into the Farmington Teachers' Hall of Fame.

For many years, Pierette played the violin and performed with several local symphony orchestras and chamber groups. She also has traveled extensively to foreign lands, with an annual trek to Italy, where half of her family resides.

Click here to listen to Part 2 ...

Pierette now teaches pre-kindergarten and kindergarten French part-time in a private school.

The rest of her time is devoted to her books: ALIVE ON THE ANDREA DORIA! and L'ULTIMA NOTTE DELL'ANDREA DORIA (The Last Night of the Andrea Doria). Pierette is the first survivor to publish a book about this historic collision, sea rescue and sinking of this event. She hopes to continue the Andrea Doria legacy by becoming the gatekeeper of Doria survivor stories for historical documentation.

The author has been featured on American and Italian documentaries and newsmagazine programs inspired by her books. She is interviewed frequently on radio, the Internet, and for periodicals. Currently, Pierette publishes articles in various American and Italian journals. Her strong loyalty to and pride in her Italian roots are evident in an interview for Le Pagine del Piemonte ("Pages of the Piedmont"): "[Writing the book] has brought me to the heights of ethnic pride. The main reason is that my book corrects a historical injustice against my people. So, I'm proud . . . because I now know that we Italians participated in the greatest sea rescue with courage and competence."

My Abundant Gifts Virtual Book Tour

Diane Eble’s “My Abundant Gifts Virtual Book Tour” is Tuesday night, and she would appreciate it if you can join her. Here is her note about the tour:

I have some great stories to share that I think will inspire you. Plus, people have asked some interesting, even challenging, questions about faith and finding God in everyday life.

You might also be curious about what a "Virtual Book Tour" is. I think it's a very exciting way to share a message in an easy-to-access format (a simple phone call). If I were doing a book signing at a bookstore, I'd invite you, but you could only come if you were local. This way, anyone with access to a phone call participate. Pretty cool.

Plus, as you'll see, you get to ask the author any questions you want ahead of time.

If you can't make the live call, a replay line will be available shortly afterward, and you can listen on your computer (even download it to your ipod if you have some such device).

Here's the signup link: http://www.askdiane now.com

If you want to get a copy of the book for yourself or a loved one (makes a nice gift--only $10--and 'm signing each one), you can order online, or if you live near me, you can call me and save yourself the shipping.

I would be honored if you could join me tomorrow night, at 8 p.m. Central, or on the replay line later.

RIGHT TO RECOVER has a video trailer!

No Marketing Budget? No Problem!

9 Free or Cheap Marketing Ideas You Can Use Today by Kristen King

Forget "bang for your buck." You can market yourself and your services for free with these easy self- promotion tips:

1. Create a signature line and append it to all outgoing e-mail messages. Include your name, the name of your business or something to identify your services, your website address, and contact information. Make it very easy for potential clients to contact you and pass your name along to others.

2. Participate actively in free e-mail discussion lists and online forums related to your target market or area of expertise. Asking questions makes you approachable, answering them gives you credibility, and reading others' comments is like a dozen free marketing and business courses rolled into one. Include your signature in every post.

3. Submit your website to the major search engines and indexes: Google, MSN, Yahoo!, Open Directory, Looksmart, and others. It's not particularly difficult to do it manually, but you may benefit from checking out a service like the one offered by Robert Woodhead at SelfPromotion.com. He provides straightforward search engine optimization (SEO) info and explains the entire submission process. The articles and advice on the site are fantastic, and a free account there is, well, free!

4. Start a blog or free, subscription-based e-mail newsletter to build recognition, credibility, and relationships, and to drive traffic to your website.

5. Write letters to the editor and op-ed columns about subjects that may interest your potential clients or that establish you as an expert. Be sure to include your URL or professional e-mail address in the author bio blurb.

6. Sell or volunteer articles for newsletters and websites read by potential clients. Include a bio that identifies your business and expertise and include your e-mail address and/or URL.

7. Write a few short "evergreen" articles and submit them to content distributors like EzineArticles.com. You may pick up a few dollars along the way, and you'll increase your visibility as your articles are reprinted by various publications.

8. Take advantage of www.PRWeb.com's free press release distribution services to get your name out there and keep your business in front of your audience.

9. Visit Craigslist.org and post a short, well-written ad in the Services section for your city or region. Include a link to your website, and use your real e-mail address (not one of those anonymized ones).

Marketing doesn't have to be expensive. Bite the bullet and shell out a few bucks for your website and a new batch of business cards every now and then -- but otherwise, save your money for things that aren't so easy to get for free.

Nashville Business Owner Earns Distinguished Toastmaster Award

As part of the Toastmasters progressive educational track, Yvonne Perry gave a 1-hour leadership presentation from the Successful Club Series, “How to Conduct Productive Meetings,” on June 12 at Fleet One in Nashville, Tennessee. It was an important event because it was the final presentation she needed to complete her DTM (Distinguished Toastmaster Award). The DTM is the highest level of accomplishment a Toastmaster can achieve and is a major milestone for any Toastmaster.

Good speaking and leadership skills are important to everyone—especially business entrepreneurs, people in sales, and those who earn their living as writers. Yvonne Perry is both a freelance writer and the owner of Write On! Creative Writing Services, who says that Toastmasters has helped her accomplish her business and personal goals.

“Toastmasters has helped me improve my communication and leadership skills during our club meetings,” says Perry. “We are both teachers and students as we learn from one another. We are a group of like-minded people striving for self-improvement in a safe and encouraging environment.”

Leadership cannot be learned in a day. It takes practice. In Toastmasters, members build leadership skills by organizing and conducting meetings and motivating others to assist them in reaching a common goal. Club leadership roles and a leadership development program also offer opportunities to learn and practice.

Being able to communicate effectively is an important part of any success strategy. Joining a Toastmasters Club will prove to be one of the best investments you’ve ever made because it is an investment in yourself that will help you can become the successful, confident person you want to be. By actively participating in your Toastmasters Club you will learn to:
  • Improve your leadership skills
  • Listen to others and give constructive feedback
  • Organize your thoughts and present them clearly
  • Think and respond confidently
In a Toastmasters club, members learn by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive environment. A typical Toastmasters club is made up of 20 to 30 people who meet once a week for about an hour. Each meeting gives everyone an opportunity to practice.

As a Toastmaster, Yvonne puts her speaking skills to good use on her weekly podcast. Writers in the Sky Podcast contains content-rich material to help freelance writers, and authors aspiring to publish a book, as well as those who love to read. The show, which offers author interviews, book discussions, tips on writing, marketing and publishing, can be downloaded at no cost on iTunes.com or accessed from Yvonne’s blog at http://yvonneperry.blogspot.com/ .

Toastmasters is a highly effective program with a successful track record for over 75 years. Since its inception in 1924, Toastmasters International has helped over four million men and women become better communicators and better leaders. Currently, there are about 190,000 members in 9,000 clubs in 70 countries around the world.

To locate a club near you, visit http://www.toastmasters.org/ .

"Shirley is an excellent thought-provoking writer...with a charm and intelligence that would make anyone envious. Her inspiration and never ending strive to see all good in life is rare and commendable..." --Dorothy Lafrinere, WomensSelfEsteem.com

Shirley Cheng (b. 1983), a blind and physically disabled award-winning author, motivational speaker, self-empowerment expert, poet, author of five books (who's working on a sixth title), and contributing author of eight books, has had severe juvenile rheumatoid arthritis since infancy. Owing to years of hospitalization, she received no education until age eleven. However, after only about 180 days of special education in elementary school, she mastered grade level in all areas and entered a regular sixth grade class in middle school. Unfortunately, Cheng lost her eyesight at the age of seventeen. After a successful eye surgery, she hopes to earn multiple science doctorates from Harvard University.

"Although I'm blind, I can see far and wide; even though I'm disabled, I can climb high mountains," says Cheng. "Let the ropes of hope haul you high!"

Cheng is also the author of Daring Quests of Mystics, a soothing read to relax the mind, body, and spirit (ISBN: 9781411656642); an empowering 700-page autobiography, The Revelation of a Star's Endless Shine: A Young Woman's Autobiography of a 20-Year Tale of Trials and Tribulations (ISBN: 9781411618602); and Dance with Your Heart: Tales and Poems That the Heart Tells, an anthology of inspirational and fantasy short stories (fairy tales, fables, and myths) and poems for the heart from the heart (ISBN: 9781411618589).

With highly acclaimed experts like Dr. Wayne Dyer, Tony Robbins, and Brian Tracy, Cheng co-authored Wake Up...Live the Life You Love: Finding Life's Passion, the latest installment in the bestselling Wake Up...Live the Life You Love series; she is also the co-author of 101 Great Ways to Improve Your Life, Volume 2, along with leading experts Jack Canfield, John Gray, Richard Carlson, Alan Cohen, Bob Proctor, et al.

Cheng is also an advocate of parental rights in children's medical care, and aide/caregiver monitoring and screening for students with special needs and disabled people. As a parental rights advocate, she wants to help today's loving parents protect and keep custody of their children. "When doctors ask yes or no, parents should have the right to say no," says Cheng, who is the survivor of the 1990 five-month internationally broadcast news of mother Juliet Cheng's custody battle with a doctor. Juliet was on CBS This Morning with Paula Zahn.

Cheng promotes aide advocacy for the disabled because she was mistreated and abused by one-to-one aides when she attended school. "The trouble with the uncaring aides actually lies with the authorities," she says. "If they listened to my complaints and kept a close watch on the aides, I wouldn't have gone through all the suffering."

She had been published twice before her writing career. One of her short stories, Mary Miller, the Elusive Lady, received Honorable Mention and was published by the Poughkeepsie Journal in 1997, and a poem, The Colors of the Rainbow, earned merit status and was published in Celebrate! New York Young Poets Speak Out in 1999.

In 2006, Cheng tied for 1st place in the national writing contest for Be the Star You Are! founded by New York Times bestselling author, TV/radio personality Cynthia Brian, garnering her a third appearance on Cynthia's live radio show. Cheng's winning entry, titled The Jewel from Heavenly Father, is dedicated to her beloved mother Juliet Cheng. In 2007, Cheng received Honorable Mention in the same contest for her essay, I Hold the Power, her personal story of overcoming blindness at the age of seventeen.

Cheng is available for interviews, speaking engagements, book signings, and inspirational events. She has been on over twenty radio shows, including Be the Star You Are! for three times, The Donna Seebo Show, and Stu Taylor on Business. She was featured in World Journal, the largest Chinese national newspaper in North America, in July of 2004.

Wedding Annoucement

As many of my regular subscribers know, my daughter was married this past Saturday. Here are a couple of photos I’d like to share with you.

This is my daughter getting ready.

This photo is the groom (right) and his brother (left) at the rehearsal dinner.

Here are two of my grandchildren who did a fabulous job as ring bearer and flower girl.

Here’s Tucker, my grand-dog. He’s staying with us while his mom and dad are in Italy for their honeymoon.

Once the “real” photos come back from the professionals, I’ll post a few of them as well.

Reader Views has added another service for authors!

Read this post from Irene Watson, Managing Editor:

This added service is for those that have a killer idea for a book, have started writing a book, or have a manuscript ready to be published! And....don't have a publisher.

With our "new" service we will guide you to create a proposal that will at least get the agent or publisher to read the content - and that's the foot in that you want. We want to help you get the best agent or traditional publisher possible.

And...in addition to helping you create the proposal, we will even send it out to publishers and agents - we have specific contacts that are willing to look at the proposals that we send in.

However, the "book" has to be more than good - it has to be great in order to compete with the hundreds of thousands manuscripts floating around. And, the proposal needs to be well crafted, your platform and marketing plan in place, and appeal to the target.

Interested? Send me a query email admin@readerviews.com (not questions about the service) - tell me what you have in mind, what your book is about, and what your platform/marketing plan is. Sell me on what you have and I would be happy to consider helping you get an agent or publisher.

Suzanne Lieurance is our host for this week's Writers in the Sky Podcast as she interviews Carla Groenewegen. Carla is the director of Summit University where Virginia M. Fellows, author of the Shakespeare Code studied. Virginia passed away before her book was published. Carla knew Virginia fairly well and has become the spokesperson for The Shakespeare Code.

Click here to listen to Part 1 ...

Here's a description of the book, The Shakespeare Code:

The true story revealed through encrypted messages within the whole works of Shakespeare far exceeds the drama, comedy, tragedy, intrigue, betrayal, false identity and heroism of the actual plays! A real cipher wheel exists today and the author has painstakingly decoded the works of Shakespeare and compared them to known historic events to create a poignant and tragic tale that ends on a note of triumphant. Illustrations and code wheels included so the reader can do it themselves.

A Update from Valerie Connelly of Nightengale Press regarding BEA

For all the authors who could not attend, but whose books were displayed at BookExpo, this was a great show. I talked about everyone's books several times to different kinds of people, and so did the attending authors. We had many browsers in the booth, and we gave away samples of everyone's books. Only a few books remained to bring home --- I could fit them into my small suitcase, and that is really not much space. So, congratulations to everyone's success!

I'll be talking about BookExpo on CALLING ALL AUTHORS today in the Publisher's Corner segment of the show, so tune in to listen if you can, and certainly go to the archives at your convenience if you can't listen to the live show today.

I think you'd really enjoy our guest too:

Ed Robertson, a TV expert and pop culture critic, whose latest book, Thirty Years of the Rockford Files, details every episode of "America 's favorite detective series." Robertson has also chronicled James Garner's other popular TV series--Maverick--in Maverick: Legend of the West.

There will be a newsletter coming out soon to highlight the show's successes.

Thank you for your participation, and please know we did all we could to shine the light on your books at the biggest and best Book Expo in the USA. Next year ---- LOS ANGELES!

Pressbox media release services

PressBox is a valued source of information for journalists and is used by thousands of media relations professionals each week. This is a f"ree service, but they also have a professional service that increases the impact and exposure of your press release, which targets your press release to journalists in relevant fields. More information on this service can be found at www.pressbox.co.uk/distribution.html.

Here is a media release I sent this week to pressbox.com or you may read it below:

Publicist, Publisher, and Writer Team up to Help Authors

Last October, Yvonne Perry of Nashville, Tennessee started a podcast called Writers in the Sky as an outreach of her company Writers in the Sky Creative Writing Services. Since then, she has interviewed more than 30 authors and continues to upload a new show to her Weblog each Friday.

The show follows a consistent format. Most have two 15- to 20-minutes segments containing tips for book marketing, advice to improve writing skills and information to ensure a better understanding of the publishing industry. Guest authors share how they got started as a writer, how they published their work, and a synopsis of their book. By sharing publishing and marketing experience, writers and authors learn from one another's mistakes and triumphs.

Yvonne Perry is a freelance writer, author, podcast host, newsletter publisher, blogger, teleseminar instructor and business owner with a team of full-time freelance ghostwriters and editors. As the author of two non-fiction books, she understands the importance of proper book publicity. She is actively promoting Right to Recover, Winning the Political and Religious Wars over Stem Cell Research in America due to be published by Nightengale Press (www.nightengalepress.com) in October. As a highly sought-after ghostwriter, Yvonne writes and edits mainly for non-fiction clients. Her goal is to connect these and other authors with the publishing industry and help them promote their books.

Having a book accepted by one of the major publishing houses is becoming more and more difficult. Those who have already established their fame have a good chance of being picked up, but most new authors aren't that lucky. Even those who are accepted report that they receive little or no help from the large publisher in marketing their book. Independent publishers are much more willing to work with their authors. Peachtree Publishers of Atlanta, Georgia (www.peachtree-online.com) is quite focused on marketing and publicizing their authors and books. They have a substantial number of previously unpublished authors on their backlist and frontlist. Paula Herr, Publicity Manager for Peachtree Publishers, landed a spot for Sheri Sinykin on Writers in the Sky to talk about her book Giving Up the Ghost. Sinykin was a good fit to share her recent bout and triumph over writer's block.

Many of Yvonne's podcast guests come from Authors Marketing Experts (AME) with spiritual or self-help books or fiction novels to intrigue readers. Several authors represented by AME (www.amarketingexpert.com) will make guest appearances on Writers in the Sky Podcast this summer including: Bill Gottlieb, Eddie Baker, Penny Sansevieri, James Therrian, and Susan Schaab. Many of these guests will be interviewed by other members of the Write On! team who enjoy having a chance to speak directly with authors after reading their book.

The show is available for download on iTunes.com and on Yvonne's blog: http://yvonneperry.blogspot.com . For more information about this podcast, see http://www.yvonneperry.net/WritersintheSkyPodcast.htm

# 3 In a Progressive Reading of Chapter One of A Trial of One by Mary E. Martin

What is Harry Jenkins up to now? Find out as we continue with the progressive reading of chapter one with Email #3 of A TRIAL OF ONE by Mary E. Martin

“Harry, I would never harm Archie or David. I loved them dearly.” Glancing downward, she spoke in darker tones, “Granted, George was another matter.”

Patiently, Norma explained away all the suspicious deaths to which she had confessed. “I was caught up in a terrible nightmare!”

He shook his head solemnly. “No. You got out of a real corner last time. Besides, admitting the confessions were false lands you right back here.”

Norma sat in obstinate silence. At last, she said quietly, “If you can’t get me out, then you’d better find the money, Harry.”

She was right, of course. As her legal guardian, he was sworn to locate all her assets and prepare an inventory. Even suspected ill-gotten gains had to be listed. Although George Pappas and Archie Brinks were dead, Harry was chilled by the prospect of an endless chain of ruthless pretenders.

As if reading his mind, Norma shifted the brim of her hat against the sun and said, “Really, Harry!” Her glance was withering. “You know everyone is dead. They never had any right to that money. It was Arthur’s and mine.”

“They didn’t think so!”

Norma, her jaw rigid, jerked away.

A fine time for her to become difficult, he thought. “Any more information will make my job a lot easier and less expensive,” he said.

Norma’s lower lip trembled. After a few sniffles, she spoke angrily. “I know you, Harry Jenkins! You think Arthur bilked a bunch of rich old biddies with some crazy scheme for a wonder drug.”

“I never said that. But George and Archie certainly had a fraudulent scheme. Who’s behind them?”

“You’re right!” she said primly. “Those two jailbirds were at the very center of the whole scheme. We knew nothing of it.”

“So where did all this money come from?”

“There was only a tiny bit to begin with, and it was just our share,” she insisted. “Arthur was a genius at investing!”

“All right, Norma. I’ll try to find the accounts with what I’ve got. You said I should start with the banks in London. But when I find them, we have to establish your right to ownership in court.”
“I told you it belonged to Arthur and me.”

“That’s not good enough. We need a court declaration stating you’re the lawful owner.”

Norma was aghast. “That’s useless! Those people laugh at court orders. Just scraps of paper.”

“What people?” he demanded. “Just a minute ago you said they were all dead!”

Her eyes glassed over. “So I did. Well then…” She began to fidget.

“What aren’t you telling me? Who’s behind Pappas and Archie Brinks?”

Norma gazed at him. In the beating sun, Harry loosened his tie.

“All I know is they’re a very dangerous, rapacious bunch, who won’t give a damn about any court orders!”

Norma’s expression chilled him. “Like who?” he asked more quietly.

She touched his hand. “Be very careful, Harry! They’re always watching and working together!”

“Where are they?” Harry pushed back his matted hair and swallowed hard.

“Mrs. Dinnick? There you are!” The nurse who had rescued him earlier was now marching around the rose bushes. “You’re due for your medication.”

Immediately, the intelligence in Norma’s eyes faded.

The nurse held out her hand. “Come with me, dear. It’s time for your injection.”

Harry knew Norma’s mad act was coming. “Don’t, Norma!” His desperation mounted swiftly.

“Who are these people?”

But the transformation was swift. Her face slackened, and her body slumped against his. The nurse helped her up, and Norma limped and swayed up the path after her. There was nothing he could do. Norma had raised the curtain just an inch, only enough for him to glimpse her shadowy world, where no one else could enter.

He stared at the huge roses looming grotesquely over him. In the lengthening shadows, the patients at the foot of the garden had grown to sinister proportions. And the damned crows were still circling! It seemed unnatural.

Alone, Harry climbed up the pathway. Norma would be lying down in a cool, dark room to receive her injection. Smiling docility would soon erase her shrewd intelligence along with any chance for further information. He knew he was on his own.

ABOUT THE OSGOODE TRILOGY.

Conduct in Question

Final Paradox

A Trial of One

They’re all about murder, fraud and love—a new angle in the mystery/suspense genre.

When Harry Jenkins must expose murder and fraud, how does his life change?

In Conduct in Question—When charm masks the Florist’s sadistic artistry, everyone’s conduct is in question. But who is the Florist?

In Final Paradox—can love and forgiveness be found amid fraud and deceit?

In A Trial of One—Who will be the candidate in Dr. Hawke’s trial of one?

Only by finding answers to these tough questions can Harry change his life.

Harry Jenkins is a most unlikely hero. The protagonist of all three novels is a middle-aged lawyer, who feels with dead certainty that life is passing him by. Trapped under his senior partner’s thumb and stuck in a dead marriage, he is desperate for change—almost any change.

In Conduct in Question, when Richard Crawford, Harry’s elegant and refined senior partner, drops dead in the office, Harry is free to make his own mistakes. Circumstance calls Harry to outwit a brilliant serial killer, dubbed by the media as the Florist—a sadistic murderer who carves floral designs on the naked flesh of his young, female victims. His sadism is heightened by his obsession with carving beautiful line drawings—to rival the artistry of the painter Henri Matisse. And yet, paradoxically, this man struggles to experience a sense of compassion. As well, Harry is nearly suckered into a money-laundering scam, from which he must escape.

In Final Paradox and A Trial of One, Harry, relentlessly pursued by the mob, must unravel a complex fraud upon a fraud to find a huge sum of money for his elderly client, Norma Dinnick. As she teeters between madness and lucidity, Harry tries to make sense of Norma’s paradoxical claims. Is she a helpless victim or the perpetrator of the fraud? To beat these malevolent forces, Harry has to call upon powers and abilities he did not know he possessed—keen intelligence, intuition and moral conviction. But he does not have to accomplish all this alone. Lucky for him, with his wife gone, real love from the beautiful Natasha helps him on his journey and waits for him at the end of the trilogy. But don’t worry! The hunt for the money ends in Venice.

#2 In a Progressive Reading of Chapter One of A Trial of One by Mary E. Martin

The contest is underway to win an autographed copy of A Trial of One, the third in THE OSGOODE TRILOGY by Mary E. Martin

Let’s continue with the progressive reading of chapter one with Email #2 of A TRIAL OF ONE BY MARY E. MARTIN

“You’re not afraid of a little work, are you? Do I have to hire a private detective?”

Harry shifted in his seat. Norma was not above bullying in order to mislead him for her own murky purposes. But if she had any more information, why send him on a pointless and costly venture? No doubt, it would be fun to scour Europe for the money, he thought, as visions of medieval towns flashed before him. But he would have to account for every penny on a court audit of his expenses.

Harry jumped when a birdlike hand pinched his knee. Glancing sideways, he saw the beady eyes of a tiny, wizened woman boring into him. Surrounded, he thought.

“Donald, what have you done with my money?” Her bright red nails dug into his kneecap. “You always were a deceitful child,” she gasped, and then spat out, “You’ve spent it on that hussy, haven’t you?”

Norma muttered in disgust, “Stupid woman! Doesn’t even know her own son. See what I mean, Harry? Lunatics everywhere!”

A nurse hurried down the veranda. “Mrs. Burke! That is not your son, Donald.” Swiftly, she removed the offending hand from Harry’s knee. “So sorry, sir.” She smiled apologetically. “I’m sure you understand.”

She held Mrs. Burke’s hand firmly until she lapsed into reverie. Harry rubbed his knee.
Norma was halfway down the steps. “Take me for a walk, please. We can talk privately in the garden.”

Carrying her cane, Harry rushed to catch up with her as she hobbled through the trellised gardens. In the glaring sun, the bees hummed among the blood red roses drooping in the heat. At last, he steered her toward a bench in the shade.

Norma pointed to the residents standing motionless in the field below. Old faces squinted upward in the sun, transfixed by the circling crows. “Look at those fools. They’re waiting.”

“For what?”

“Something to happen.” She shrugged. “They’re mad, you know.” She plunked herself down on the bench and continued, “I do not belong in this insane asylum.”

Harry raised his hand to quiet her. “You know, Norma, I can’t get you out of here.”

Despite her prior confessions of murder, Norma was fond of changing her tune.

#1 In a Progressive Reading of Chapter one of A Trial of One by Mary E. Martin

As a subscriber to Writers in the Sky blog, you are entitled to participate in a contest. Enter to win an autographed copy of A Trial of One, the third in THE OSGOODE TRILOGY by Mary E. Martin

There are three books in THE OSGOODE TRILOGY:
  • Conduct in Question
  • Final Paradox
  • A Trial of One
They’re all about murder, fraud and love—a new angle in the mystery/suspense genre. Harry Jenkins is a most unlikely hero. The protagonist of all three novels is a middle-aged lawyer, who feels with dead certainty that life is passing him by. Trapped under his senior partner’s thumb and stuck in a dead marriage, he is desperate for change—almost any change.

To get you started, here is Email #1 in a progressive reading of chapter one of A TRIAL OF ONE BY MARY E. MARTIN

Officially, Harry Jenkins’ elderly client, Norma Dinnick, had committed no crime. While she embroidered tales of murderous revenge in a singsong voice, her doctors rubbed their jaws to hide their smirks. Such a sweetly smiling woman could not have committed the cruel and devious acts she so vividly described. Their diagnosis was psychotic dementia with a touch of Alzheimer’s thrown in. Court documents, stamped with a gold seal, declared her mentally incompetent. After all, psychiatrists were not so easily fooled.

Once appointed as her legal guardian, Harry found her accommodations in the most luxurious mental hospital possible. Their deal was unspoken—a nice, permanent home with refined residents, not a jail. For him, Norma remained a fascinating conundrum, and after all, lawyers only wanted to know so much.

His next task? Locate the missing shares in Elixicorp Enterprises hidden by her deceased husband, Arthur. Their value? Thirty million dollars or so. Only she, Norma insisted, had any right to them, but Harry knew that some had died trying to wrest them from her. He envisioned a line of brutal successors lurking in the shadows, waiting for him to falter. Those shares had to be somewhere and, as he drove off to see her today, he determined to find out as much as he could.

In declaring Norma incompetent, the court, in its wisdom, required Harry to consult with her on decisions, if possible. But fortunately, he was not bound by her instructions. Today, he might jog her memory for clues to the missing shares, although her recollections ran from the unreliable to the fantastical.

Gravel crunched beneath his tires as the road to the Mercer Mental Hospital narrowed and mounted steeply between jagged rocks. A small green sign, with white lettering, marked the entrance. Getting out of the car, Harry took off his jacket. The sun bore down, and the heat hit hard. The breeze sang softly through the grasses and caressed his face. In the field below, a group of patients gazed skyward, while an attendant pointed at black ravens circling against the brilliant sky. A nature outing, Harry supposed, but Norma would not be among them. Unless she could command a group, she would have no part of it.

Suddenly, one bird broke from the military precision of the flock and swooped down upon a patient who, clutching his head, ran in circles. As the attendant warded off the attacker, the inmate cringed beneath a tree. Harry turned away and collected his briefcase.

He had heard many versions of Norma’s story of the Elixicorp shares. Some hung together— for the most part. Others were so absurdly confused that they strained the credulity of the most gullible soul. As best as Harry could determine, her husband Arthur, had been part of a consortium to raise money in the nineteen sixties for the development of a wonder drug to forestall memory loss. Ironic that everyone seemed to have forgotten just where those shares might be! Now, all the partners— George Pappas with his underworld connections, Arthur, Archie Brinks, and David Parrish were dead. So, who was entitled to the money?

Walking up the path, lined with tall maples, he saw the white clapboard buildings with their green awnings and wide verandas. Norma sat near the screen door of the main entrance. She wore a pretty, floral dress, neatly cinched in at the waist, giving her a decidedly girlish appearance. Easy to spot her in the midst of all the hospital gowns. A piano rendition of My Blue Heaven floated out on the summer air. Only her foot tapped to the music. Harry had a vision of a single flower sprouting in a dry, stubbly field.

Bending awkwardly to kiss her cheek, he saw the glint in her eye, which said, This is a huge joke. We both know I don’t belong in this nuthouse.

“Have you found the missing shares yet, Harry?” Norma demanded.

“Not yet. I need more information.”

“I’ve told you everything I know. And you still haven’t found the bank accounts?”

“I need the bank transit numbers.”

She peered at him sternly. “Arthur would have dealt with only the most reputable financial institutions.”

“Even so, that narrows the field only slightly, to dozens of banks with innumerable branches.”

TGIF June 8, 2007!

TGI Friday! I have uploaded a new show to my podcast this week.

Author Jamie Beckett joins Yvonne Perry today on Writers in the Sky to discuss his book Burritos & Gasoline.

Click here to listen to Part One now ...

For two decades Jamie Beckett earned his living by playing guitar and singing, pressing apple cider on the family farm, working as an auto mechanic and marketing records for the likes of Guns and Roses and Keith Richards. By the 1990s he was flying small airplanes with student pilots at his side and working to restore WWII era airplanes to flying condition. His freelance writing was showing up in aviation magazines on a regular basis, too. By 2000 Jamie was writing a weekly newspaper column for a central Florida daily. As his first novel began to take shape, Jamie’s work had seen publication every month for almost 15 years.

Jamie wrote his first novel, Burritos and Gasoline, when he couldn’t find a book in the little grocery store in his tiny home town. He went home empty handed and started thinking about stories that were more universal than the murder mystery genre. He came up with a simple story that revolved around a deep friendship between two boys. After establishing that basic human premise he began to explore the idea of isolation, personal failure and the possibility of redemption.

Click here to listen to part two ...

Mr. Beckett says he is perfectly happy with his decision to publish with a POD because he wanted control of everything from the cover design to the plot to the development of the characters - and that’s exactly what he got. And, the results are fabulous. The book is well made and the story is very compelling.

The online video allows authors and publishers to share the books similar to the way movies advertise their upcoming films with previews. The Reader Views team is excited about providing their innovative book PreViews. The PreViews will likely change the way books are promoted in the future.

“There will be a number of ways to use PreViews as a promotional book marketing tool,” says Irene Watson, owner of Reader Views. “Aside from posting your PreView on our website, YouTube and our MySpace, you will have the rights to the video and may post it on your website, your MySpace, distribute it with your marketing materials or any other venue you choose to promote your book. It is truly something no author or publisher should be without.”

Publishers and authors are increasingly turning to these new PreViews for their books. Due to dramatizations and engaging narration, PreViews come off just like regular movie trailers only better because they can be viewed on personal websites and played as promotional footage and advertisements. There is no end to the possibilities.

New Horror Fiction Magazine to Debut

A new horror fiction magazine will debut January 1, 2008.

Noctem Aeternus will be a FREE quarterly PDF magazine where the reader will find science fiction, fantasy, western, or even mystery stories…but all tales will have an element of horror.

“The horror genre sometimes gets a bad reputation for being the shock jocks of the literary field,” Editor Michael Knost said. “You can find plenty of blood and guts, but sometimes there is no story among the gore. Noctem Aeternus will be a quality fiction magazine, focusing on the story and its characters.”

The first issue will include a short story (and interview) from master storyteller Ramsey Campbell. Cherie Priest, Charles Coleman Finlay, Tim Waggoner, and Michael Laimo will have stories as well.

Interviews with filmmaker/musician Rob Zombie and featured artist Kuang Hong will also be found. Paula Guran, Michael Knost, and Jude-Marie Green will offer quarterly columns about the horror genre, reviews, etc.

Donna Latvis of Bridgewater, MA is available for book readings/signings of her book released May (2006) “Defend God’s Word.” Here’s a note from Donna:

In this book I attempt to share the wisdom I have found in the Bible. To share what God’s Word has shown me about Salvation, Faith, Comfort, Prayer and many other subjects. This is my testimony of the hope I have found through my Savior Jesus Christ. This is my way to give God the honor and praise He so richly deserves for all He has done for me. The Bible is God’s written word to us. It can guide us throughout our lives. It can shepherd us to eternal life. It is so important to get to know God’s Word, believe God’s Word and be willing to Defend God’s Word!
In March 2005 my first book “Gifts from God” was released. This was a collection of poems that I had written throughout my life. I started writing in my early teens, with my grandmother, Ina Blanchard Bates influence. She had written poems, short stories and song lyrics for years. And I could always go to her for advice.

I was born in Whitman, Massachusetts in 1959. In 1979, at the age of 20, I moved to Norfolk, Virginia. But the Massachusetts area was always home for me. So in 1997 I moved back. Some people might think I’m crazy, but I love the seasons, and yes the snow. I have had some of my writing in newspapers, anthologies, and on my web sites
