Life After Death, Some of the Best Evidence

Author on psychic phenomena, Dr. Jan Vandersande, will be joining show host Yvonne Perry on Writers in the Sky Podcast August 22, 2008. Today we welcome Jan to our writing blog. He is discussing his book Life After Death: Some of the Best Evidence.

Yvonne: Tell me something about yourself and your writing background.
Jan: I am a physicist by training and have a Ph.D. degree. I have published over 80 scientific articles in scientific journals and conference proceedings. This is my first book.

Yvonne: What is the title of your book? Give us the basic story line so we’ll know what it’s about.
Jan: The title is Life After Death: Some of the Best Evidence. It describes the psychic phenomena my wife and I experienced over an eight year period. We were lucky to experience trance mediumship, direct voice, trumpets flying around the séance room and see ectoplasm. Using my own experiences I was able to critically read much of the literature on psychic phenomena and take some of the best evidence for survival from it. These cases are described in my book.

Yvonne: What inspired you to write this book?
Jan: As I just mentioned, my wife and I witnessed psychic phenomena, called physical phenomena, which are very rare to see, over an eight year period. These phenomena were the inspiration to write this book. These phenomena provided such good evidence for life after death that I wanted to tell the story about what we witnessed. Also, my experiences made it possible for me to critically read much of the psychic literature and take from it some of the best evidence for life after death.

Yvonne: Is this the first book you have written?
Jan: Yes, this is my first book.

Yvonne: How long did it take to write this book? Any interesting tidbits about your writing method or how the book developed?
Jan: It took me about three years to write it. I did a lot of reading of the psychic literature to take some of the best cases providing evidence for life after death.

Yvonne: How did you publish your book? Tell me about your publishing experience and what you learned from it.
Jan: I submitted the book to about ten publishers but all turned it down. Many publishers will not take direct submissions so you have to go through an agent. I tried about five agents that handle New Age books but they turned me down. I believe that the publishers and agents were afraid to touch a book about physical phenomena such as ectoplasm and materializations. As a result I decided to publish the book myself. I used Outskirts Press to publish the book and they have done a great job.

Yvonne: Where is your book available? Do you have a Web site or blog where we can learn more about you or your book?
Jan: The book is available on-line at: Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com. Towerbooks.com, etc. The website for the book is: www.outskirtspress.com/bestevidence.

Yvonne: As far as marketing, do you do more online publicity or print/radio/TV promotion? Tell me some ways you have promoted your book. Give examples and links to any sites you feel might help other authors.
Jan: I have been able to get two psychic websites to recommend the book as well as a critic who specializes in books on the paranormal. I did a radio interview and will give a lecture later this month. I sent out books to try to get reviews but that is not easy. My topic is controversial (materializations) and I think that not to many book reviewers want to touch it.

Yvonne: Have you hired a publicist to help promote this book? If so, what was your experience like?
Jan: No, I have not thought about a publicist yet. I am waiting to see how sales go by doing it myself.

Yvonne: Any other comment you would like to share?
Jan: Writing the book is half the battle. Then there is publishing and promoting it.

Yvonne: I agree! Marketing a book can be a full-time job. Thank you, Jan, for giving us the opportunity to get to know you and learn about your book. I wish you well in your journey as an author.

Summary of Life After Death, Some of the Best Evidence

The author, Jan W. Vandersande Ph.D., has described in considerable detail some of the best evidence that he is aware of for life after death. He has based this evidence on his own experiences which include sittings with trance mediums and channelers, and also sitting quite regularly over an eight-year period in a circle in which he witnessed physical phenomena such as trumpets flying around the séance room, direct voice, and ectoplasm. All his experiences are described in detail.

Additionally, three of his close friends witnessed full materializations numerous times and one of them, Professor Jack Allen, photographed ectoplasm coming from the medium as well as two full materializations. These four photographs are shown in the book.

His experiences have made it possible for him to critically read a lot of the existing literature on psychic phenomena. He has cited numerous cases, which he believes are genuine and are some of the best evidence for life after death. These cases come from channelers, trance mediums, direct voice and materialization sittings. Several materialization mediums are discussed in detail, and some photographs of ectoplasm and full materializations are shown and are compared to the ones taken by Professor Allen. Considerable emphasis is placed on materializations since they are the most impressive evidence for life after death.

The author also considers alternative explanations for these psychic phenomena such as fraud, telepathy and “super-ESP” but in all the cases he documents the survival of life after death hypothesis is the most likely explanation.

Author B.T. Lenox Speaks about Immigration Issues

WITS host, Sarah Moore, interviews Bridgett Lenox, the author of the novel Beyond the Border--a fascinating and disturbing look at illegal immigration programs, specifically in the San Diego area, and the politicians that initiate them.

Click here to listen to part one on immigration issues...

B. T. Lenox grew up with two brothers in the suburbs of southeast San Diego where Mexicans worked both legally and illegally for neighbors and friends. She often overheard stories of capture and abuse, and witnessed border patrol agents taunt and threaten migrant workers. She now lives in a state where actors and immigrant actors become politicians, politicians that attain the title of President.

In this interview, you will learn why she wrote a book that points an accusatory finger at the Border Patrol and the politicians who are dealing with illegal immigration. Lenox details how border patrol agents use some extreme, horrific methods in their attempt to deal with illegal immigrants. Regardless of your personal stance on this hot topic, Ms. Lenox's portrayal of illegal immigration enforcement will certainly make you think.

Book Synopsis

In 1979, four of the toughest boys in town vomit and weep when they stumble across Border Patrol agents who covertly exterminated caged, illegal aliens with kerosene and a single cigarette. Later, as adults, two of the boys discover that the same practices still secretly exist and are sanctioned by both the State and Federal authorities to further political careers.
Beyond the Border is a story about an attorney, Mike Phillips, fighting for the rights of illegal aliens--unknowingly and feloniously aided by a Columbian ally—but undermined by a staircase of politicians and political platforms that escalates to the Presidency and the future Presidency.

Three Flies Up

Kelley Dupuis will be joining us on Writers in the Sky Podcast July 18th, 2008!

Kelley Dupuis was born in Vermont and grew up in California, where he attended San Diego State University, graduating with a degree in journalism and history. After a few
years in newspaper and radio work, he joined the U.S. State Department and traveled about the world. Later he returned to journalism, winning a San Diego Press Club award for investigative reporting in 2004. He currently lives in Washington, D.C., where he works as a writer and editor. He and his wife Valerie, a real estate broker, have three dogs, three cats and no children.

In Three Flies Up, Washington, D.C. author and award-winning journalist Kelley Dupuis explores two themes, one universal and one uniquely American. The perennial theme of fathers and sons forms the backdrop for the story of the author’s long, usually-troubled relationship with his own father, a career Border Patrolman who grew up both poor and largely without a father in his own life, and as a result had no role model for being a father himself. As the author grows up in the 1960s and ‘70s, father and son are at loggerheads more than often than not.

But they share one very important, very American thing: a mutual love for the game of baseball, one of few things capable of bridging the cultural, generational and emotional gap separating father and son. Baseball is their chief, often only, common ground. When the author is in his late forties, after years of estrangement from his father and following his mother’s death, he returns home to California to assist in caring for his dad, now approaching 90 and gradually falling victim to dementia. Eventually, when the author becomes his father’s primary caregiver, baseball is more important than ever.

A Book or a Game of Golf?

Author of a series of books based upon golf, James Ross will be joining us on Writers in the Sky Podcast June 27, 2008.

Born in Central Illinois in the early 1950s James Ross grew up wanting to be a professional athlete. He was the oldest son of a high school basketball coach and a homemaker. Early in his life his dad took a job as a textbook salesman for a division of Doubleday. Soon thereafter the family relocated from the cornfields of Illinois to the Metro St. Louis area.

He took up the game of golf at the age of twelve when the family moved to a golf course development in the western suburbs of St. Louis. His passion for the game grew from that moment on and with continued practice he became a low-handicap player. Mr. Ross was a three-sport athlete in high school and accepted an athletic scholarship to go to college. After one year of that he transferred to the University of Missouri in Columbia. There he was a member and social chairman of Beta Theta Pi fraternity until he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with emphasis on real estate and finance in 1974.

After a few years of traveling and a two-year stay in Los Angeles at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena, Mr. Ross returned to the St. Louis area to embark on a career in sales. After turning fifty he decided to get in touch with the creative side of his mind and sat down to write. Three years later his first novel, Lifetime Loser, was published.

Upon completion, the writing bug had consumed him. Before his first novel was finished he had begun the second book. Finish Line is a continuation of the happenings in and around the fictitious setting of Prairie Winds Golf Course on the East Side of St. Louis. Drawing inspiration from his characters, the third book, Tuey’s Course, is in development.

When he is not writing, Mr. Ross is out looking for a golf game around town or traveling to some warm weather destination to enjoy an amazing life. Many of his stories will be centered on a sports theme complete with applicable analogies. Being a native of the Midwest they will also carry references to the heartland of America.

Known best for living life to the fullest James Ross decided early on that he was going to work to live, rather than live to work. With a persuasive demeanor and a “don’t-take-no-for-an-answer” attitude he embarked on a journey that allowed for him to live life along the way.

Synopsis for Finish Line

After getting caught committing a petty act of vandalism, two teenage boys land summer jobs at Prairie Winds Golf Course on the east side of St. Louis. Follow the adventures…
of Justin Ventimiglia and Keith Puccio as they explore a slice of life that they never knew existed. Observe the special relationship between adolescent boys, a cast of grown golfing misfits, and a young man battling the demons of cancer.

Explore the heart-wrenching relationship between an impressionable child and a pseudo Big Brother. Witness the summertime ride of the two youths in a poignant story about life and death. See them as they develop a love for the game of golf and apply those lessons to the challenges of life.

Experience the reactions of Justin and Keith to the vices of the world such as drinking, smoking, and gambling and watch how their knowledge molds their character. Take the journey with them as they battle a dysfunctional family situation, exposure to a life-threatening disease, and the vices of the world as they live a summer to remember.

…there are several imprints, but only a few big houses. Who owns the big houses?
…large retail booksellers have such power that they can dictate terms such as the right to purchase an author’s book for 55% off retail and retain the ability to return any unsold books for a full refund?
…Amazon.com doesn’t want your book if you didn’t publish with Booksurge?

Jerry D. Simmons, the author of What Writers Need To Know About Publishing, is coming to Writers in the Sky podcast today on June 6, 2008 to share his experience and help authors understand what goes on inside major publishers. She was the manager and director of The Hamlett Players, a theater repertory company that provided performance opportunities for new actors and toured original stage plays to communities not served by traditional theater arts organizations. She credits her mentor, the late Sylvia Burack, for her ongoing love of - and commitment to - the live theater experience. Synopsis:

Can Life really imitate Art? When sophomore Laurie Preston is chosen to be lead screenwriter for a movie her high school is producing, she sees the chance of a lifetime to scribble a romantic script that will finally make the boy of her dreams say the words she's been longing to hear. Unfortunately, the senior hottie who won her star-struck heart from the very first moment she saw him has yet to discover she even exists.

Movie Girl is the launch title of a new humorous fiction series targeted to teen/tween girls. Inspired by the author's long memory of high school angst and her current work in the film industry as a consultant, Movie Girl is a comedy that transcends the generations and affirms that every "Laurie" will know an "Artie" at least once in her life. Hopefully such infatuations will not last more than a semester.

Writers and Readers Read Up!

DID YOU KNOW THAT. . .

…there is a difference between a writer and an author. There’s also a difference between a published author and a successfully published author and it has nothing to do with publishing method?

…publishers are signing fewer and fewer titles and authors these days?

…there are several imprints, but only a few big houses. Who owns the big houses?

…large retail booksellers have such power that they can dictate terms such as the right to purchase an author’s book for 55% off retail and retain the ability to return any unsold books for a full refund?

…Amazon.com doesn’t want your book if you didn’t publish with Booksurge?

Jerry Simmons, the author of What Writers Need To Know About Publishing, is coming to Writers in the Sky podcast on June 6, 2008 to share his experience and help authors understand what goes on inside major publishers. Jerry has worked for 25 years for Random House—a major New York publishing house. His new site, NothingBinding, is an online social networking outlet where authors may sell their books and readers can find the books they are looking for. Join NothingBinding and submit your book now! http://www.nothingbinding.com/

Find out more about what Jerry has to offer authors on his website www.writerreaders.com.

Author Tim Stewart on Gang Activity

Tim Stewart will be joining us today on Writers in the Sky Podcast to discuss his book Positive Force.

Tim Stewart was raised on a farm where he was controlled by nature, not a clock, but he soon learned that he had better be on time when he joined the U.S. Army and left for basic training in 1973. By the time he retired as a Captain in 1998, he had been a military policeman, a motor pool dispatcher, a combat medic, an infantryman, an infantry platoon leader, an infantry executive officer, and an infantry company commander (twice). He had taken a unit to Germany and provided training for one of the elite units. He was also a trainer at the Officer Candidate School where he was the Distinguished Candidate of Class 29-84.

The greatest adventure of Tim’s life began when he was stationed at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Denver, CO. There, he met the love of his life—a redheaded nurse who became his wife after only six weeks. Thirty-two years later, Tim and April have three children and five grandchildren—most of whom have namesakes as characters in his book Positive Force.

Synopsis of the book:

Positive Force offers a positive alternative to gang involvement. It is a fictional story, but comes complete with a constitution that can be applied to help young people focus their energies on positive action vs. negative influences. Oakwood is divided by 5 gangs. The main characters are a nurse, a cop and a red headed youth. A patient of the nurse’s, who has been silent for twenty years, screams when she sees a tall red headed young man on the street. The nurse discovers that the young man looks eerily like the woman’s son, who died as a result of gang violence. The nurse begins a journey to find the young man. She begins this search while raising a freshman basketball player and a seventh grade son as a single parent. She starts at the police department. Here, she meets the head of the city’s gang commission, who is also raising a freshman basketball player and a seventh grader as a single parent. They are forced to live in the same house when the officer’s house is destroyed by gangs, thinking they have killed his sons. The sons are very much alive and have to wear disguises to attend school. The fun begins when his freshman son is recruited by the gangs, and it is discovered the red head is the ghost of the nurse’s patient, who can’t cross over until the cause of his death (the gangs) is removed. Positive Force replaces the gangs. The old woman meets her son and breaks her silence. The ghost crosses over, then returns with wedding rings for pair, and rings for each of the founders. If gangs return, the ghost can be called back by any two ring bearers joined together. “Positive force is an attitude of positive action over negative influences.”
