Yvonne Perry is hoping to network with about 20 blog owners to help get the word out about her children’s book of holistic (body, mind, spirit) stories. Each book teaches skills such as following inner guidance, being true to one’s self, or overcoming fear. Modeled after the lessons Yvonne's grandson, Sidney, these are great for the classroom, young readers, or toddlers being nurtured at home.

Online Networking Divas Meet in Person at Southern Festival of Books

Authors Yvonne Perry and Carolyn Howard-Johnson meet for the first time at the Southern Festival of Books in Nashville.

NASHVILLE, TN — It was a match made in Cyber heaven for two female business entrepreneurs when they connected via the Internet this spring. Soon after they met online, authors Carolyn Howard-Johnson and Yvonne Perry began assisting one another with business endeavors. On Saturday, Oct. 13, the two women met for the first time in person at the Southern Festival of Books: A Celebration of the Written Word at Legislative Plaza in Nashville.

At the Southern Festival of Books Carolyn Howard-Johnson presented "Realize Your Dream: From Query Letter to Bestseller—Frugally!" After speaking to fellow writers, editors, and authors about her recently released to me The Frugal Editor: Put Your Best Book Forward to Avoid Humiliation and Ensure Success, Ms. Howard-Johnson signed her books as those eager to meet her in person chatted as they waited in line. Readers of Carolyn’s books obviously “get” the message of her books. Many were helping one another connect with local writing groups by sharing business cards, flyers and information about writing, editing and book marketing.

“My publisher, Valerie Connelly, asked Carolyn to appear as a guest on her radio show Calling All Authors,” says Perry. “After hearing the archived interview, I immediately signed up for Carolyn’s newsletter, Sharing with Writers. Carolyn and I hit it off easily and have been helping one another ever since.”

Modern Day Helen Keller Receives Honorable Mention in New York Book Festival Competition

Shirley Cheng, a blind and physically disabled 24-year-old motivational speaker and author, has received Honorable Mention in the Poetry category of the New York Book Festival Competition for her newest release, Waking Spirit: Prose & Poems the Spirit Sings, a heartfelt collection that explores a world of dancing hearts, singing spirits, with infinite love from life.

One of her short stories, Mary Miller, the Elusive Lady, received Honorable Mention and was published by the Poughkeepsie Journal in 1997, and a poem, The Colors of the Rainbow, earned merit status and was published in Celebrate! New York Young Poets Speak Out in 1999.

In 2006, Cheng tied for 1st place in the national writing contest for Be the Star You Are! founded by New York Times bestselling author, TV/radio personality Cynthia Brian, garnering her a third appearance on Cynthia's live radio show. Cheng's winning entry, titled The Jewel from Heavenly Father, is dedicated to her beloved mother Juliet Cheng. Writing Contest Makes Every Entrant a Winner with a 750-word Critique

Want to get published but don’t know how your novel measures up? Enter The Writing Show First Chapter Contest and get 750 words of feedback from publishing industry pros plus a week’s free access to Literary Market Place Online, a searchable database of the North American book publishing industry.

• First prize: $500, the two-volume print version of Literary Market Place, and an interview on the popular podcast The Writing Show.
