Purple Snowflake Marketing- How To Make Your Book Stand Out in a Crowd

Today we welcome award-winning author, blogger, and radio show host, Lillian Brummet to our writing blog. She is discussing her book Purple Snowflake Marketing – How To Make Your Book Stand Out in a Crowd.

YVONNE: Tell me something about yourself and your writing background.

LILLIAN: Well, I have been writing professionally since 1999, and as a hobby prior to that. I started out as a poet, moved into writing how-to articles – freelancing for magazines, and then in 2004 produced the first book in collaboration with my husband, Dave. Currently, my husband and I have three published books available to the public, and one that we produced as a family memoir cookbook.

YVONNE: What is the title of your newest book? Give us the basic story line so we’ll know what it’s about.

LILLIAN: Purple Snowflake Marketing - How To Make Your Book Stand Out In A Crowd, is a guide for writers to develop an effective, frugal marketing plan for every piece they produce. Whether it is utilized by order of chapters or randomly at the reader's discretion the e-book is a marketing plan in itself.. This practical advice is rounded off with tips for dealing with non-supportive family and friends, reassurance along every step of the way, along with ample advice for avoiding pit-falls and setting a pace for marketing endeavors. The first edition was originally released in June 2007 and since then has made the recommended reading lists of more than a dozen writing courses. We just released the 2nd edition of this book through Booklocker.com in June, 2009.

YVONNE: What inspired you to write this book?

LILLIAN: The book itself is our personal marketing plan. We use it to develop marketing strategies for each piece we write. As such it is a work in progress; we are constantly improving the marketing plan and adding new valuable resources, contacts and marketing opportunities. The reason why we decided this book needs to be released to the public is that I was being inundated with emails, messages and posts on forums with questions about how we did everything. In 2007 we released the first edition which did very well, the second edition is surpassing our expectations and is reaching a much larger audience.

YVONNE: Is this the first book you have written?

LILLIAN: No, I've written/co-written three other books prior to this e-book. The first two books (Trash Talk and Towards Understanding) are available in paperback and hardcover formats. We are in the process of taking these two books in e-book formats in the very near future, but plan to release them as revised editions. Towards Understanding's revised e-book edition for instance has some updated sections (i.e. bio and introduction) and there are five additional poems, creating a conclusion that I am more comfortable with and that flows better with the title and focus of the book – coming towards understanding on the value and purpose of one's life. This will be released in August 2009, if all goes well. I mentioned earlier the family cookbook memoir is not yet available to the public, and there is another book—a gardening book—that has been in the works for years but has not yet been judged worthy of pursuing a publishing contract. This book and a few others are still in the manuscript stage.

YVONNE: How long did it take to write this book? Any interesting tidbits about your writing method or how the book developed?

LILLIAN: Dave and I have taken several business management courses, business marketing plan experience and have also run businesses in the past so the process of developing marketing and business plans is certainly not new territory for us. Because Purple Snowflake Marketing is our marketing plan too, its early development began prior to Trash Talk's release in 2004. Our marketing plan began with heavy research on and off line as well as conversations with others in our field and through researching every book on the career of writing that was available to us. Utilizing the research, the tools we had learned from courses and experience from running businesses—the plan was off to a good start right away. However, the world of writing is like going to university full time, and you never ever graduate! So as we learn new tools, new technology, new resources... these are added to the original plan, enriching it day by day.

YVONNE: How did you publish your book? Tell me about your publishing experience and what you learned from it.

LILLIAN: For the first edition, we knew we wanted it to be an e-book already so I began studying e-book publishers and researching writer's sites to get advice or to learn warnings about various publishers. After narrowing it down to a few that I wanted to try, I began querying for the book. It was picked up right away by a publisher that seemed really great at the time. It wasn't until later that we realized we were not getting a number of the particulars that we were promised in the contract, and royalties were consistently three to six months behind the schedule promised by the publisher. So that was really hard to work with since we could not see the results of our marketing efforts until it was too late to do anything about it. After much deliberation, despite this publishers support and excitement for the future of this e-book, we decided to cancel our contract and go with another publisher. This allowed us the opportunity to produce a second edition with tons of new information and resources.

YVONNE: Where is your book available? Do you have a Web site or blog where we can learn more about you or your book?

LILLIAN: I decided on our current publisher for this e-book (Booklocker.com) through having worked with the owner in other ways over the years. The owner and her staff had always been incredibly helpful to other writers; the group is very generous with their tips and support. As soon as I looked into the publisher's policies and contract I knew this was the right one for us. The one bonus of this publisher is that the author receives a secure webpage where they can monitor their sales instantly – which is very helpful for evaluating whether a particular marketing effort was effective or not. Another unusual bonus is that this publisher pays royalties every month – and this can be helpful too, in dealing with the costs involved in a new release. At some point we do plan on exploring larger e-book distribution opportunities such as Clickbank but for now, we are happy working exclusively with Booklocker.com on this project.

YVONNE: Tell me some ways you have promoted your book. Give examples and links to any sites you feel might help other authors.

LILLIAN: Wow! There are so many! Where do I begin?... Well, let me start with how I've been marketing the 2nd edition since its release in June 2009. Before I do, let me clarify that because this is the 2nd edition, I am not currently focusing on building a level of name recognition, developing contacts or getting reviews, as much as getting the release announcements out there. The first thing I did was to email all the professionals that are quoted in the book to let them know it is now available. This was helpful in getting enthusiastic support with others starting to spread the word. Then I let every organization listed in the 26 appendices know the book has been released. Now all of these people knew they were in the upcoming e-book, but sending them releases was helpful in encouraging them to spread the word through their circles. My next step has included utilizing social networking sites, updating our websites and blogs, arranging for blog and radio interviews... all the usual stuff. Dave has been kept busy with all the graphics and images, banner ads and radio promo blurbs, website updates and the like. The next step is now in place and this is to create edu-mercial articles for newsletters, like yours—followed by a strategic advertising campaign. This is only the initial release so there is a lot of work ahead of us. In fact, few people realize this but the promotional work is not done until the life of the contract for that particular book has ended... so this might mean seven years of marketing one book, or longer!

YVONNE: Any other comment you would like to share?

LILLIAN: Yes, I'd like to thank you, Yvonne. You've been a wonderful support for writers in so many ways. I know, I was one of the writers that have been greatly influenced by the work you do. Your newsletters, your radio show... all of it! Fantastic stuff! I encourage everyone reading this to check out Yvonne's radio show in particular. In fact, Yvonne, you appeared on my radio show too... and this is mentioned in the e-book as a recommended resource because you offered so many great tips during that discussion!

Let me also say to all the fellow writers, whatever their special interest or genre they prefer to delve into, is to be patient, develop a comfortable pace... and know that having a lot to do is a good thing!

YVONNE: I appreciate the mention of me and Writers in the Sky in your book. It is fun to network with you.

The Number One Place to Promote Books

Writers and published authors need to take advantage of the number one method of book selling—the Internet. The Internet is the greatest selling and marketing tool available to an author. I wrote an e-book, Book Marketing in the Digital Age Online Promotion Made Easy, because so many of my clients are authors who do not have a clue about how to market books.

The material in my e-book is a combination of what I teach when I do seminars, speaking engagements, and one-on-one mentoring with authors needing assistance with book publicity. I want to use this article to offer a few online marketing tips for new authors.

One the simplest, most cost-effective ways to reach a broad online audience with your product and urge the reader into action is social networking. I’m referring to sites and online places where people share friendship and information. My favorite sites are Twitter, Facebook, Ning, and Plaxo, but there are many other places you can let others know about you book, blog tour, or other marketing events. When establishing a following on social networking sites such as face-book, Twitter, GoodReads, Ning, Yahoo groups, and other sites, search for people by reading their profiles. Look for keywords that describe or relate to the topic of your book. Look for people who read the types of books you write. Also, be sure to include your keywords in your profile or bio that you use on these sites. This helps others find you.

The biggest mistake authors make when attempting to market their books is going out unprepared or without having a marketing plan or the information necessary to successfully create the buzz. Many authors do not even have a Web site or blog with a point of purchase that gives the reader enough information about the book to actually make an informed purchase. My e-book teaches an author what components are necessary to have on a site in order to compete in today’s online marketplace. You can follow the steps in the e-book as a marketing plan.

It takes time and consistent effort to build your following and get people interested in your book before they will take action to buy it. It’s been said that someone must see or hear about a product seven times before they will buy it. Book marketing success may not happen overnight, but you will begin to see steady progress if you stay at it. It will take you about six months to complete everything in the e-book because some of it has to be set up such as Web sites, blog tours, and social networks.

Author Aaron Taylor Will Join Our Podcast This Friday

Please join WITS author's assistant Sarah Moore this Friday when she interviews Aaron Taylor, author of the forthcoming book Alone with a Jihadist: A Biblical Response to Holy War.

Aaron Taylor is a first-time author who has been traveling the world as a missionary since high school. In Alone with a Jihadist: A Biblical Response to Holy War, Aaron describes his one-on-one meeting in London with a militant jihadist named Khalid. In what was supposed to be a clash of civilizations to be filmed for a documentary, Aaron found that his long-held views about the role that Christianity should play in government and geopolitics. He now advocates the belief that Christians are called on to be pacifists, and explains in his new book how he came to this philosophy and specific examples of its potential for practice in current events.

During the interview, Aaron Taylor will be discussing the details of his meeting with Khalid, his opinions on the prevailing Christian leadership in our country, and what he finds in the teachings of Christ to support his new world view.

Alone with a Jihadist: A Biblical Response to Holy War will be released this fall.

As I sit to write this book review, President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanhayu have just wrapped up their first series of meetings together as world leaders. Among the topics of discussion were the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, how to handle the Iranian regime, and other serious issues based in the Middle East. I could not help but reflect on the intention and possible outcome of these talks through the lens of the amazing new release Alone with a Jihadist: A Biblical Response to Holy War, written by first-time author Aaron D. Taylor. In fact, much like one conversation greatly altered Mr. Taylor’s perspective on global events and the individual’s role within them, his one book has led me to intense personal reflection on the relationship between faith and political philosophy.

The book Alone with a Jihadist: A Biblical Response to Holy War details Aaron Taylor’s meeting with a militant, Christian-hating jihadist named Khalid. Aaron, a lifelong participant in his Midwestern charismatic church and active missionary for the past ten years, entered the cold warehouse in London at which the two were to meet with the intention of converting Khalid to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Instead, Aaron came away with his own views challenged, particularly concerning the relationship between government and the advancement of the Christian faith. He transitioned from a belief that aggression with a religious aim was to be advocated by Christians to a new understanding that Christians are taught through Scripture to be pacifists.

Aaron Taylor now shares the message that Christians are to live outside the existing government structures and return to a focus on the Prince of Peace. Taylor uses a powerful combination of conviction and compassion in detailing this newfound perspective, about which he writes and speaks regularly. Alone with a Jihadist: A Biblical Response to Holy War includes Scriptural references throughout the text to support the view that believers of Christ are not to take arms against those who do not subscribe to the same ideology, but instead be pure examples of brotherhood. While he ardently believes in the truth he is sharing, Taylor’s writing also displays his understanding for those who have not reached the same conclusion. He acknowledges the teachings of most traditional evangelists, as well as the tragic experiences of many around the world which make the notion of pacifism a difficult philosophy to embrace, and never belittles or nullifies their viewpoints. With his background as a former advocate of military force and through his visits to more than a dozen countries, Taylor submits a resume that makes his arguments worthy of attention and serious consideration.

Alone with a Jihadist: A Biblical Response to Holy War is a book with an impact that lasts well beyond the moment at which the final pages are read. Through his writing, which is not only passionate but also reasoned and well-researched, author Aaron Taylor offers all of his readers the opportunity to rethink their entire outlook on war, government, and the role of religion. If you are a Christian who has felt conflicted over a country’s use of force in the name of promoting religious freedom, you will want to read Alone with a Jihadist: A Biblical Response to Holy War.

If your religious convictions are unwavering, regardless of your specific mantra, you will be intrigued at how one powerful conversation can shake someone’s ideological core. If you simply are a person who considers himself a scholar of history and world affairs, you will find in this book an excellent addition to your personal library. Anyone who is living in this world in which battle lines are blurred and the Bible is used by some as a blueprint for military strategy will want to read Alone with a Jihadist: A Biblical Response to Holy War. Through this work, Aaron Taylor has developed a thesis that, if implemented, would revolutionize individuals and governments. I look forward to seeing how Aaron will continue to use his one meeting with a single jihadist, a man who was supposed to be his enemy, to further his cause of peace and brotherhood.

Selected Authors will Earn up to $5k per Title

ANDOVER, MA – July 21, 2009 — Helium, the world’s largest writing community, today announced a partnership with RAND Publishing, publisher of The Skinny On™ series of illustrated non-fiction books. Under the partnership, RAND Publishing will leverage Helium’s social publishing platform to identify the most appropriate authors for up to twenty-five new titles, such as The Skinny On Finance for Young Adults and The Skinny on Social Networking. Selected writers will be chosen by Helium and paid between $3,500 and $5,000 per title.

First launched in 2008 by acclaimed author, attorney and motivational speaker Jim Randel, The Skinny On series is designed to provide time-starved and information-overloaded readers with "the skinny on life's most important lessons."

Inspired by the Japanese literary form, Manga, a whimsical, illustrated modality for story-telling, and easily read in about an hour, each Skinny On subject is explored through the lives of ordinary people - normal in all respects but one: they happen to be stick people.

“The Skinny On™ books challenge the traditional publishing model for non-fiction works,” says Peter Newton, vice president of business development for Helium. “We look forward to helping such an innovative publishing company quickly and cost-effectively source new authors so they can continue to grow and scale their business.”

Helium’s partnership with RAND marks the latest in a series of alliances formed with various media companies over the last year. In February, Hearst Newspapers partnered with Helium to access premium local and lifestyle editorial content for its newspapers.

Helium has also partnered with prestigious journalism organizations such as The National Press Club and The Society of Professional Journalists, which view the site as a resource for their members to build their digital writing credentials and showcase their work in front of thousands of publishers online.

Poet John Yamrus Joins Our Podcast This Friday

Please plan to join Sarah Moore, author's assistant with Writers in the Sky, this Friday for her interview with poet John Yamrus. They will be discussing Mr. Yamrus' recently published collection of work entitled New and Selected Poems.

New and Selected Poems is the seventeenth book of poetry published by John Yamrus. The collection features seventy-six poems, sixteen of which are being published for the first time. His work has been translated into Spanish, Swedish, Italian, Japanese, French, and, most recently, Romanian and been discussed in classrooms at both the high school and college level. He has received accolades and public recognition for his writing, with 2009 marking his second consecutive nomination for the Pushcart Prize for Poetry.

John Yamrus will be discussing the influences behind his writing, his thoughts on academic poets, and the dangers of peer criticism, as well as sharing some examples of his work.

To purchase New and Selected Poems, please visit the Amazon website or Lummox Press.

Title of Document: Book Review
Book Title: New and Selected Poems
Author: John Yamrus
ISBN Number: 978-1-929878-00-0
Publisher: Lummox Press
Genre and Target Market: poetry
Publication Date: 2009
Book Length in Pages: 138

I did not approach the latest collection by John Yamrus, entitled New and Selected Poems, with any pretense of providing a critical and academic perspective on his rhythmic flow or line structure. I certainly am no expert on poetry, but instead I am simply a lifelong admirer of anyone who can weave together language and create beautiful art. Besides, I always felt that deconstructing a poem and writing a five-page essay on its symbolism or a specific word choice removed some of the unfiltered emotion I could experience from a well-written poem. Despite already learning that works by Yamrus have been studied by both high school and college students, I was able to open his book without viewing it through the lens of academia. I knew that my approach towards the work of John Yamrus would simply be to open the pages of his book and share my personal reaction.

In his poetry, much to my delight, Yamrus himself challenges the notion of academic poetry. In fact, he shares an automatic suspicion of those poets who are embraced by the ivory tower community. The poem “the academic poet” describes such a writer
as one who

has been included in

countless anthologies

he’s received fellowships

and grants

however his poetry shows that

there is no soul

no guts

it’s so much empty air.

This sentiment, repeated in several of the pieces in New and Selected Poems, resonated with me as I often felt frustrated by professors telling me which writers should be studied and honored and even how I should react to their words. I was thrilled to meet, at least through his words, a poet who displayed a true passion for the purity of the craft.

Most of Yamrus’ work focuses on everyday observations made as he sits with his loyal dog, responds to letters and emails written by those who have read some of his previous work, or makes a trip to the neighborhood drug store. While the circumstances may seem ordinary, Yamrus’ wry perspective and sharp use of language make each poem a piece to be read over and over again. With the risk of sounding trite or simply offering the expected praise, I will freely admit that I found a connection, or at least a personal understanding, with each selection. I appreciate Yamrus’ matter-of-fact approach to each topic that he addresses and the self-awareness that he holds for his place in the world of poets.

The new collection by John Yamrus, New and Selected Poems, includes pieces that he has written over the past twenty-four years as well as sixteen new offerings. Whether is he railing against “poets” who are

saying nice things

only to get the same nice things

said about their own

mindless crap

(my personal favorite) or sharing his tiresome reaction to television news with lines such as

bored with it all,

i turn it off

and walk down the hall…

stumbling toward/eternity.

film at 11,

Yamrus employs humor, irritation, reverence, and resignation to engage the reader in the various subjects that demand his response. New and Selected Poems was my introduction to John Yamrus, and offered a greeting that guarantees I will reach back to discover what he has written in the past and wait with anticipation to see what he produces in the future.

Five Steps for Creating and Bringing an E-book to Market

Have you written a book you would like to sell as an electronic download? E-books are becoming more popular since they can be taken on trips and read on an electronic reader such as the ones made by Sony or on Amazon’s Kindle reader. The iPhone also has this capability. Here are a few things to think about when you author an e-book.

1. Creating a PDF

When I decided to sell my e-book titled Book Marketing in the Digital Age Online Promotion Made Easy through an affiliate program, I started checking around for places that provide an affiliate service. Beginning with friends who might have done this before, I asked for input about what is needed to create an e-book. The answers I got ranged from “get a professional graphic designer to lay it out” to “just convert a Word doc to a PDF using one of those free online sites.” I choose a middle path and created the e-book in a Word doc and then used Adobe Acrobat to embed the characters and distill the file into a stable format that could be downloaded or emailed. You can set a password that unlocks the PDF, but you will probably be spending a lot of time re-sending the password to customers who lose it.

With that much solved, I still needed to cover a few more bases.

2. ISBN

ISBN is an acronym for International Standard Book Number. This is a unique number that identifies a book and allows it to be cataloged for international distribution. Without this 10- or 13-digit code, a book cannot be referenced in databases used by bookstores. However, an e-book is not a printed book and is not available in traditional bookstores to begin with. So, while it may be useful and preferred, having an ISBN is not always necessary for distributing an e-book. Some online retailers mandate that e-books they sell have an ISBN, so be sure to check the outlets you plan to sell through to see if they require it.

3. Add Copyright

You may know that the little c inside the circle © is a way to protect your intellectual property. An additional protection comes from applying for a copyright from the US Copyright Office. It costs $45 and can be done online. Copyrighting your e-book won’t keep people from stealing the content, but it will prove that you have legal rights to the contents.

4. Protection From Piracy

Either by forwarding it an email, selling a computer that has the file saved, or passing along a burned CD, people will more than likely share your e-book illegally. While it is considered piracy to give away or resell downloaded property, there is really no way to keep people from sharing an e-book with others. You can hire an attorney if you find someone is doing this, but I doubt it would be worth the money to prosecute. The best way around that is to make your e-book a marketing tool, so when it is shared, you are actually reaching another customer who sees what else you have to offer in your e-book. This could result in their coming to your site and purchasing a legal copy of another product you have for sale, so the old adage “if you can’t beat them, join them” is applicable in this instance.

5. Choose An Affiliate

Next, decide which affiliate service to use if you want other people to sell your book for you. You keep a percentage of the purchase price, and give a portion to your sales team or affiliates. Therefore, affiliate programs need to have a way to track sales and distribute commissions to the sellers. They also need to be transacted on secure and reliable site on the Internet because if there’s money to be made, someone is out there trying to find a way to steal it. For that reason, I asked my Twitter friends for recommendations. Clickbank.com, Wahmcart.com and 1shoppingcart.com were the top responses. The features and fees vary on each of these from $39 to $99 per month. Some keep a percentage of commissions and have only a one-time activation fee, so check each one carefully to make sure you understand what you get for the money.

No matter where you sell your e-book online, you're going to have to do a lot of marketing to get people to buy it. That just happens to be the topic of the e-book I released in October 2008. Article Marketing Using Stories on Your Blog

At a recent conference, an agent suggested to a friend of mine that she place a handful of her short stories on the Internet to get her name out there. Since the stories are based on characters in her novel, this would also serve to introduce readers to the characters in hopes that they would want to reconnect when the novel is published.

My friend asked me, “Do I post the stories on my Web site and blog and drive the traffic to the stories, or do I post them on article directories with reference to my blog and site, or something else?”

To which I replied:

If your stories are about the characters of your book, post them on your own Web site/blog and drive traffic to them through social marketing such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.
Let's say one of your characters has a relationship with someone who is physically abusive to her. I suggest writing a content-rich article about domestic violence and posting it on an article directory such as EzineArticles.com. Be sure to include a link in your resource box to invite readers to go to your site to read a story.

Once the reader is at your blog, they will find the story you promised, but at the end of the blog post, there’s also a small invitation to purchase your book. You might write something like this: “If you liked this story, you will enjoy reading BOOK TITLE—a love story about an abused woman who learns to stand up for herself.” Then, I would add a link to purchase the book.

This type of marketing is called a soft sell approach. You are making good information available, letting people know what you have to offer, establishing an online presence, and possibly selling a book!

Let me know how this approach works for you. Feel free to leave a comment on this blog.

Audiobook Filled with Poetry and Music

The new audio book Sightlines: A Family Love Story in Poetry & Music by Janet Riehl is a compilation of very personal music and poetry that is not to be missed!

Audiobook Review
Book Title: Sightlines: A Family Love Story in Poetry & Music
Author: Janet Riehl
Genre: audio book, poetry, folk music
Publication Date: 2009
Reviewed by Sarah Moore for WITS

When we diligently read our history books as part of our school’s curriculum, we learn about the famous men and women who earned their spot in print as world leaders, great businessmen, explorers, military heroes, or even criminals. While all aspects of history fascinate me, I must confess that my interest has always been more with the everyday folks who loved their families, took pride in their work, and, although they may never be studied in a classroom, made a lasting impact on the people who knew them. My ninety-eight-year-old grandmother has an amazing memory and can recount in detail an incident that happened with a playmate in 1917. She is also a musician who shares songs and piano melodies that remind her of being a teenager or raising her children during a war. I know from her that the retelling of family history and traditions is the best way to capture a picture of a bygone era. I have discovered a treasure that beautifully captures this appreciation for the warmth of family and home. The new audio book Sightlines: A Family Love Story in Poetry & Music by Janet Riehl is a compilation of very personal music and poetry that is not to be missed.

Riehl’s audio book developed from her written text, Sightlines: A Poet’s Diary, which was published in 2006. With the new release, Riehl adds the elements of down-home music and her own voice bringing life to the poems she created. The musical component features her father’s singing and fiddle playing as he is joined by other musicians for recordings that took place in his living room. The fact that the music was not performed in a high-tech professional studio makes its inclusion even more appealing and appropriate. As you listen to old friends gather to play music, you feel so fortunate to be let into the intimate gathering. I felt that I should be sitting in a rocking chair with my eyes closed as I let the simple beauty fill my soul. Each piece provides a seamless transition for the subjects of the poems it connects.

The poems by Janet Riehl are divided into five groupings that are spread over four CDs. The first section is devoted to her sister Julia (also known as Skeeter), who was tragically killed in a car crash several years ago. The emotional images Riehl creates through her words examine Julia’s work, her love of life, the moment of her death, and the longing of those she left behind. Riehl goes on to share equally captivating poetry about her father, her mother, and two places that have special meaning to her— the family home in Evergreen Heights and her later residence of Clear Lake in Northern California. In addition to the poems themselves, Riehl provides emotional commentary that fills in the missing pieces and develops a more complete memory for the listeners to enjoy. Her words are straightforward, beautifully crafted, and offer a wonderful piece of storytelling.

From beginning to end, the new audio book Sightlines: A Family Love Story in Poetry & Music is a delight for its listeners. The passion that Janet Riehl has for her family, her history, and the beauty that surrounds her is obvious. Even if you already read the printed version of Sightlines: A Poet’s Diary when it was released several years ago, you will want to enjoy the extra features and meaning that are offered through this listening experience as well. The audio segments have been expertly compiled and edited to create the comfortable atmosphere of someone’s home while also displaying professional detail to recording quality and content progression. Each moment of the CDs is filled with warmth, humor, and a deep connection to those who have come before us. Sightlines is a must-have audio book for anyone who appreciates a good love story with the perfect musical accompaniment!

Choosing a Publishing Method

Conventional publishing with or without an agent, self-publishing, or publish on demand. Which publishing method is right for your book?

Perhaps you are writing a mystery novel, and are unsure whether to: look for an agent to pitch your book to a conventional publisher, self-publish on your own, or use a publish-on-demand company to bring your book to market. There are a few things to consider with each option.

· Publishing contracts for an unknown author without a huge media following are harder to get than ever. If you do decide to go with a conventional publisher, I recommend getting an agent. It may still take years of querying and being rejected. You may not own the copyright to your book when all is said and done, so read carefully or have an attorney read over the contract. If your book doesn’t sell, the publisher may back list it, which is a way of saying it’s on the back burner but not being promoted.

· Self-publishing requires that you do all the work yourself or subcontract the things you don’t know how to do such as getting the ISBN, creating the cover design, laying out the interior of your book, finding a printer, and getting the book into distribution channels.

· A publish-on-demand (POD) company is best suited to most first-time authors. They do all the leg work for a fee. Again, make sure you are the owner of the copyright to your book when the publishing is complete.

The type of publisher an author chooses should be determined by the author’s intention, timeline, and budget.

Author Intention
What do you plan to do with your book when it is published? Do you plan to sell it in hopes of making a profit or is your intention to share it with only a few close friends or to have as a record of your life for your family’s sake?

Author Timeline
If you have a time-sensitive topic, you can’t afford to wait the typical two years of querying in hopes of getting a contract from a conventional publisher. It may take another year to get the book on the market after you have a contract. If you need to get the book to the market sooner, you may want to self-publish or go with a publish-on-demand company such as Published by Westview in Nashville, Tennessee.

Author Budget
Going the conventional publishing route may give an author a small up-front payment known as an advance. Be sure you read your contract carefully to make sure you don’t have to pay back the advance money if your book doesn’t meet their sales quota within a certain amount of time.
No matter what route you choose to bring your book to the market, the publicity is going to be up to you, the author. And, that’s fine, because who knows a book better than its author anyway? Yet, many authors do not have a degree in marketing or know where to begin with such a task. That is the purpose of my eBook, Online Promotion Made Easy—to teach authors how to market their book through online networking and promotion.
I wish you much success on publishing your book!

Internet Dating is Not Like Ordering a Pizza

Today we welcome Cherie Burbach to our writing blog. She is discussing her book Internet Dating is Not Like Ordering a Pizza.

YVONNE: Tell me something about yourself and your writing background.

CHERIE: I'm an author, blogger, poet, crocheter, (and most of all) geek. I've written six books, and I also blog and write full-time. My favorite hobby is following the Packers and reading about Tudor history.

YVONNE: What is the title of your book? Give us the basic story line so we’ll know what it’s about.

CHERIE: The title is Internet Dating is Not Like Ordering a Pizza. It's a guidebook for online daters on how to write a profile, email their online match, set up coffee dates, and even move on when your relationship gets more serious. The book doesn't just give blank advice like "write a better profile" but shows daters exactly what to write (and not write) through concrete examples.

YVONNE: What inspired you to write this book?

CHERIE: A few years ago I did online dating, and met over 60 guys for coffee in just six months. It was a very positive experience for me, in part because I could convey my personality with the written word. I wanted to let daters know that anyone can have the same experience. (Oh, and one of those guys turned out to be the one I would marry!)

YVONNE: Is this the first book you have written?

CHERIE: No, I've written six.

YVONNE: How long did it take to write this book? Any interesting tidbits about your writing method or how the book developed?

CHERIE: I started outlining points for the book a few years ago, but once I sat down and wrote it, I believe it took about six months. The title actually came from my husband. I said that I wanted daters to know that they can't just order up a date like they do a book or shirt or a pizza! And he said, "I think you've got your title there."

YVONNE: How did you publish your book? Tell me about your publishing experience and what you learned from it.

CHERIE: A few years ago I started my own company, and it's been a wonderful experience. I've learned that no matters who publishes your book, you must be diligent about marketing.

YVONNE: Where is your book available? Do you have a Web site or blog where we can learn more about you or your book?

CHERIE: My book is available anywhere online where books are sold (Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc.) The best place to find me is at my website: www.cherieburbach.com. I have links to my books and blogs there.

YVONNE: Tell me some ways you have promoted your book. Give examples and links to any sites you feel might help other authors.

CHERIE: I started a website specifically for the book (http://internetdatingpizza.homestead.com/) and place all the interviews, reviews, and news about the book there. I also did an online virtual tour in April, which was so much fun! Info (and stops) from the tour can be found here: http://internetdatingpizza.homestead.com/press.html.

YVONNE: Thank you for giving us the opportunity to get to know you and learn about your book. I wish you well in your journey as an author.

CHERIE: Thank you so much for having me as a "guest." I feel writers should support one another and am happy you do so much to help promote writers!

One Dash or Two? Using En and Em Dashes in Writing

En dashes (–) are used to show duration such as when writing the time 9:00–5:00, or range such a date April 15–31 or number 100–150. The en dash can also be used as a hyphen in compound adjectives in which one part consists of two words or a hyphenated word: pre–World War I era. En dashes do not have spaces in front or behind them.

En dashes are created on a Mac computer by simultaneously pressing option-hyphen. For Windows users, the en dash is created by holding down ALT while typing 0150 on the numeric keypad.

Em dashes (—) are used in place of a colon or parenthesis to show an abrupt change in thought or to separate clauses in a sentence. Em dashes may be also used to show an open range: Jane Smith, 1987—

Mac users press shift-option-hyphen to create an em dash. The em dash is created in Windows by holding down ALT and typing 0151 on the numeric keypad. Microsoft Word will automatically create an em dash whenever you type two hyphens without spaces between them and without spaces before or after the words connected by the hyphens: word--word will convert to word—word.

Hyphens are used to connect two words and to separate characters in a phone number (123-555-0123).

The 3-em dash uses six hyphens before and after a word ( ------ and ------ ) when a person’s name or some other word(s) is being omitted. You may want to start in the middle of a longer quote while indicating that other words actually preceded or followed the part of the quote you used. For example:

------ that religion is a matter that lies soley between man and his God ------ thus building a wall of separation between Church and State. ~ Thomas Jefferson

Now you have the facts about dashes and it’s up to you whether you decided to dash or not to dash!

Janet Riehl to discuss the process of making her audio book.

We have a special guest on Writers in the Sky Podcast today as Janet Riehl joins Yvonne Perry to talk about Janet's new audio book Sightlines: A Family Love Story in Poetry and Music.

Have you ever wanted to create an audio version of your book? Janet did. In fact, it was a lifelong dream to share her poetry and her family's music. She combined both in a one-of-a-kind audio book that blends and portrays the songs her family wrote and performed. These songs would otherwise have been lost once her father passes. Instead, Janet now has a priceless audio filled with memories that she is sharing with others. See the video documentary series of how this audio book was created over a one-year time period. These You Tube videos were filmed and produced by Yvonne Perry's son-in-law, Scott Kidd.

The audio book Sightlines: A family Love Story in Poetry and Music is available on CD Baby at this link: http://cdbaby.com/cd/janetgraceriehl. There, readers can listen to as much as they wish online.

Janet Grace Riehl is a seasoned writer, artist, musician, and storyteller. Although Janet roamed the world and then came home to be near her family, she defies the stereotype of a down-home, heartland gal. Her travels and work have taken her across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. With her father in his 90s, Janet returned to the Midwest to settle in St. Louis, not far from the home place her ancestors founded in the 1860s. In southwest Illinois, it sits high on a bluff above the Mississippi River. After returning to her roots, Janet embraced poetry, memoir, and short stories.

Click here to listen to the interview where Janet explains the process of making an audiobook. Learn more about copyrighting, distribution, and marketing!

Janet's first book Sightlines: A Poet’s Diary is a family love story narrated in story poems that bring together six generations of memories and history. In the words of one reviewer, the collection offers “village wisdom for the 21st century.” Janet's poetry book was recently expanded into an audiobook Sightlines: A Family Love Story in Poetry and Song. This four-disc set includes not only 90 poems, but also music recorded in her father’s parlor along with his jokes and stories that anchor the original poems in their time and place.

Go to http://www.riehlife.com to sign up for a 10-minute audio download of poetry and music from Janet's new audio book Sightlines: A Family Love Story in Poetry and Music.

Sightlines: A Poet's Diary is available as a paperback book on Amazon with thirty-one 4- and 5-star reviews.

What Can Be Done to Avoid Piracy of e-books?

Along with marketing and selling e-books online comes the issue of piracy—or folks passing them on to people who have not purchased them. If you market e-books, how can you be sure that the e-books aren't pirated?

If you want to sell e-books that others have written, be sure to deal with people you know. By establishing a network of people in your industry, you can help one another succeed. Your network will have or know of products and e-book you can sell; and because you have earned one another’s trust, you have peace of mind that you are offering quality content that is produced legally.

If you don’t have a network, you could choose products from an affiliate program that has a good reputation. Many e-books are now listed on Amazon.com and they have an affiliate program. If an e-book is listed there, it has been through a selection process that requires a registered ISBN. No ISBN; no listing on Amazon.

If you write and sell your own e-books online, you may be concerned about other people stealing your material. It’s certainly true that many copyrighted PDFs and e-books are passed around illegally. So, what can an author do? While you have a right to pursue legal representation to recover your losses, you may have a difficult time trying to locate all the places and people who are violating your copyright. In your e-book, you can request that the purchaser not forward your e-book to others who have not paid for a copy, but unfortunately this request can easily be ignored.

I recommend that you put your name, URL, or some type of identifying or marketing text throughout your book. That way, if someone does get your e-book by pirated means, they at least have a way to: 1.) report it to you, 2.) check out your site to see if you have other e-books or services they need. You never know, they may actually purchase your next e-book.

Do not offer the same e-book you sell as a give-away or prize in a contest or promotion. People may think that if your e-book is free, then people should not have to pay for it. Create other products to offer as freebies or as incentives, but let the e-books you sell be reserved only for that purpose.
