Burritos & Gasoline

Author Jamie Beckett will be Yvonne Perry's guest on Writers in the Sky Podcast June 8th, 2007!

For two decades Jamie Beckett earned his living by playing guitar and singing, pressing apple cider on the family farm, working as an auto mechanic and marketing records for the likes of Guns and Roses and Keith Richards. By the 1990s he was flying small airplanes with student pilots at his side and working to restore WWII era airplanes to flying condition. His freelance writing was showing up in aviation magazines on a regular basis, too. By 2000 Jamie was writing a weekly newspaper column for a central Florida daily. As his first novel began to take shape, Jamie’s work had seen publication every month for almost 15 years.

Jamie wrote his first novel, Burritos and Gasoline, when he couldn’t find a book in the little grocery store in his tiny home town. He went home empty handed and started thinking about stories that were more universal than the murder mystery genre. He came up with a simple story that revolved around a deep friendship between two boys. After establishing that basic human premise he began to explore the idea of isolation, personal failure and the possibility of redemption.

Mr. Beckett says he is perfectly happy with his decision to publish with a POD because he wanted control of everything from the cover design to the plot to the development of the characters - and that’s exactly what he got. And, the results are fabulous. The book is well made and the story is very compelling.
