Empathy - Poetry by Yvonne Perry

Empathy

Nervous vibe around the heart
That holds up castle walls
and keep you
Lonely, seeking
Retreating, reaching
Like a weight on the chest
Holding back all the rest
The lid to keep love safe inside

No!
Open the doors and let love fly
A safety net is in place
To keep you from going
where you’ve already been
and want to not be anymore
Because it hurts
to have the gift
you hate to love
the curse
you love to hate

You feel too much
You know, you see
Like a sponge, soaking up sea water
You thrive in what drowns you
And close off to what frees you
