Up All Night

I stayed up all night
trying to seduce Mr. Sandman
Eyelids heavy
Mind on steroids
Chasing rabbits down trails
That wind a circular path
back to the latest insanity
I’m trying to erase
From the banks of a lane call Memory
Fast track to a red-eye day
Headache hovering
Yawning, fawning
Over an afternoon nap
That escapes my sleepy head

The descending lineage mentioned in this book are David Ward and Nancy Martin, Thomas F. Bates and Sarah Elizabeth Ward, Savannah Bates and Alexander Newton Smith, and Lemuel Harris Bates and Lillian Margaret Smith.
