The Nautilus Book Awards 2008- Call for Entries

Changing the World One Book at a Time - www.nautilusbookawards.com

** Recognizing Books that Promote Spiritual Growth, Conscious Living, and Positive Social Change **

The eighth annual Nautilus Book Awards are now accepting entries in 23 subject categories honoring books that contribute to our society's awareness and well-being, and that embrace values such as compassion, sustainability, and global peace. Books copyrighted or released between June 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007, in English, are eligible. Final deadline for entering is January 15, 2008.

Today, with mass global communication, political unrest, depletion and destruction of our natural resources along with religious and secular fanaticism all growing at an alarming rate, the need for books that promote positive social change is great, and the phrase, "Changing the World One Book at a Time" is more meaningful than ever before. Authors and publishers and their books CAN and ARE making a difference. The Nautilus Book Awards were conceived to recognize and reward these world-changing books in 23 categories, including four new ones: AGING/REJUVENATION; ENERGY MEDICINE; CONSCIOUS MEDIA/JOURNALISM; and INDIGENOUS/MULTICULTURAL.

Judging: Nautilus Book Awards winners and finalists are carefully selected in a unique three-tier judging process by an experienced team of book reviewers, librarians, authors, editors, book store owners, and leaders in the publishing industry.

Awards: Winning titles will be exhibited in a 2008 Nautilus Book Awards Showcase at BookExpo America in the Los Angeles Convention Center from May 30 - June 1 , 2008. A winner, runner-up, and 5-6 finalists will be named for each category, a special award will be given to the top small press or self-published title, and two overall Grand Prize winners (one adult and one children's) will be announced. Winning titles will be featured for one year at www.nautilusbookawards.com and thereafter kept in the Nautilus Book Awards archives.

TGIF September 21, 2007!

Reverend Dan Bloodworth isYvonne Perry's guest today on the Writers in the Sky Podcast!

Yvonne met Reverend Dan Bloodworth in 2005 and immediately became intrigued by his enthusiasm regarding stem cell research. Reverend Dan and Carol Bloodworth’s All-American athlete son, Brian, suffered a spinal cord injury when he was hit by lightning in 1987. Now an adult, Brian, is in a stage 4 coma and is fed through a tube.

Reverend Bloodworth has been advocating for blastocystic (embryonic) stem cell research for more than 16 years in hopes of finding help for his son. As a result of his extensive knowledge on the topic, Dan has been appointed to the Advisory Council to Congress regarding stem cell research. Dan believes he can make the world a better place by helping others understand the facts about blastocyst stem cell research.

Rev. Bloodworth attended Rhema Bible College in order to better understand how the right wing beliefs against blastocystic stem cell research are supported. His education led him to believe that stem cell research and any subsequent therapy is a gift from God, and showed him that the logic of those who use the Bible to support their beliefs is unfounded.

Click here to listen to the 30-minute interview...

“Neither the scripture nor biological data can be used to support that a life is being taken when blastocyst stem cells are used for research,” says Dan.

When Dan travels the country and speaks about stem cell research, preachers and parishioners are astounded because they simply did not know that fertilized eggs are not human beings. “They have a mental picture of a little miniature baby swimming around in its mother’s womb,” reports Dan. “They have never been given factual or scientific information about blastocyst stem cells, and they haven’t done any research on their own. Instead, they are willing to naively believe other people who have told them that in vitro stem cell research kills babies.”

After Dan shared his findings and Biblically supportive information with Republican Leader Senator Bill Frist of Tennessee, Senator Frist became a major supporter of federal funding for blastocystic stem cell research. He even spoke against President Bush’s veto of H.R. 810 in July 2006, which would have allowed research on stem cell lines previously frozen for use in fertility treatments. I’m sure you would like to know what Reverend Bloodworth shared that was so convincing. That’s exactly what he will present in our interview on September 21st.

Yvonne Perry learned a lot from Dan and included his information in her book RIGHT TO RECOVER Winning the Political and Religious Wars over Stem Cell Research in America. This book is now available on all online bookstores and will be available in local bookstores October first.

Dan invites people to ask him questions and make comments. You may contact him at:
Rev. Dan Bloodworth
C/O Worth The Blood Ministry
372 Hogans Branch Rd.
Goodlettsville, Tennessee 37072

or email him at DANB1966 @ aol dot com. (You will need to remove the spaces and substitute a period (.) for dot in Dan's email address. We are trying to avoid spam by posting in this manner).

TGI Friday! I have uploaded a new show to my podcast this week!

Joanne Lozar Glenn will be joining Rosi today on Writers in the Sky Podcast to discuss her book, Mentor Me: A Guide to Being Your Own Best Advocate.

Click here to listen to Part 1...

Joanne Lozar Glenn, an independent writer, editor, and educator, develops educational programs and materials for associations and other businesses.

The author of Mentor Me: A Guide to Being Your Own Best Advocate in the Workplace and coauthor of 25+1: Communications Strategies for Business Education, Joanne has also written more than 100 articles, brochures, and teaching guides. Her writing has won awards, most recently an Apex Award of Excellence (2007) for newsletter writing (NBEA Keying In, November 2006: Teaching Reading in the Content Areas) and an Apex Grand Award—Writing (2006) for the article, “No Plain, No Gain: The Importance of Plain Writing in Business.” In 2005, she won a Bronze award for the column “Mentoring from the Inside Out” from the Society for National Association Publications (2005) and speaks on this topic to professional organizations.

Click here to listen to Part 2...

A former junior high teacher, Joanne has also worked as a manager of education programs, editor of a trade association magazine, and editorial consultant for textbooks. While employed by an international healthcare association, she was both inspired by the talent of one of her employees and discouraged by the lack of promotional opportunities available to this employee. So she developed an “under the radar” covert mentoring program to help the employee gain basic managerial experience. The insights developed during that time became the foundation for a course called “Be Your Own Mentor,” on which her book, Mentor Me, is based.

Joanne regularly designs and delivers workshops on Mentor Me principles, and on business writing and adult learning, to community colleges, university-based continuing education programs, and other professional organizations. She is an active member of Women in Technology and the International Women’s Writing Guild.

Writing Articles & eBooks

There’s always something to write about, whether it’s a bad day at work or a celebration for a family member.

I used my vacation journal to create 12 articles. I made at least three articles out of my experience in remodeling my kitchen and we aren’t done yet!

If you are writing these story-like pieces, you may as well get some marketing mileage out of them and post them on article directories. I used the articles from my two-week vacation in Palm Springs, California and turned them into an eBook. If you would like to have the eBook to use as a gift to those who visit your Web site or blog, let me know and I will send it to you at no cost.

TGIF September 7, 2007!

Yvonne Perry has uploaded a new show to her podcast this week!

Francine Silverman will be joining Yvonne Perry today on Writers in the Sky Podcast to discuss her book "Talk Radio for Authors."

Francine Silverman is a lifelong New Yorker who honed her writing skills as a newspaper reporter and freelance writer. She authored two travel guidebooks, Catskills Alive (2000 and 2003) and Long Island Alive (2003), both published by Hunter Publishing.

Click here to listen to Part 1 of our interview...

In 2003, Fran started Book Promotion Newsletter for authors of all genres. http://www.bookpromotionnewsletter.com/. The ezine spawned Book Marketing from A-Z (Infinity Publishing 2005), containing the best marketing strategies of 325 subscribers. The 400-page paperback is in alphabetical order for ease of use. The book received nearly 40 rave reviews from on-line reviewers.

In 2006, Fran started a publicity service and has gotten subscribers placed in the Boston Herald, Oklahoman and Chicago Tribune as well as on Internet and terrestrial radio programs. Until recently, Fran began her own Internet radio show, Book Marketing with Fran, on Achieve Radio, http://www.achieveradio.com/.

Click here to listen to part 2 of our interview...

The latter two ventures inspired Fran to compile another book, called Talk Radio for Authors - available on Amazon. The book contains valuable information on talk radio shows across the U.S. and Canada that invite authors as guests. It saves authors the time and trouble in locating appropriate programs to contact. Fran is now compiling yet another book - this time with the help of an agent - Radio Wants You! An Intimate Portrait of 500 Radio Shows that Welcome Guests - designed for a general audience. Her website is http://www.bookpromotionnewsletter.com/

Only Moments

Only Moments was originally written within the cyclical theme of Birth, Death, and Rebirth over ten years ago. The author, Nick Oliva, focused on the unforgiving world, the false hope of technology and religion, incorporating one’s own search and questioning of the spiritual aspects that provide some measure of meaning, and then tying it into the romance of total devotion of man and wife. Some might call it a fairy tale romance, but there are many “high school” relationships that have survived the test of time, however difficult. These two characters are both heavily flawed but those flaws are what binds and drives them with their deep passion for music.

Here is what Nick says:

The road, throughout the novel is representative of one’s life path and sense of curiosity and discovery. I spent years coming close to the publication of this book and eventually put it on hold for years until I was motivated to attempt it once more.

As time went by, I realized that I had to include the events of the World Trade Towers but

needed to wait until it wouldn’t seem as if I was using those events just to capitalize on public sentiment. As it turns out, the waiting was for the better. The characters lived in New York City at this time and it gave me a chance to expand upon the themes echoed throughout the book as well as break a few rules and show a glimpse of the secondary character in her own words. I’m sure I will receive much criticism for the breach, but I don’t care, as rules are made to be broken occasionally. Considering those who do the criticizing most of the time, those critics usually have nothing to show and have taken no chances in the fields that they critique.

This book contains many real events and is semi-autobiographical. The writing began with the Big Sur and California coastal highway trip at age 16. This juvenile escapade radically changed and redeveloped my core perspectives of life. The turning point of the book that alters time is the “rebroadcast” of the very first 1971 “The Midnite Special” television program that I indeed did attend as a part of the studio audience, blue fringe jacket and all. That took place on my second trip in the summer of 1971 with a good friend, Tom and a brand new Chevy Vega that blew up four times in Wakeeney, Kansas. I placed it in 1970 to create the alteration of time from the beach deck in Florida to the beachfront in California. There are other slight changes to accommodate a deceased artist (Janis Joplin) that I wanted to use in the finale. A previously written section described the huge outdoor concert called the Atlantic City Pop Festival that precluded Woodstock. I attended this in 1969, but edited that section out to streamline the reading and keep the essential plot moving. The performance from this concert I morphed into fiction as the broadcast videotape to be able to still use it later on in the “passing over” sequence.

Short Adaptation Film Contest

The Short Adaptation Film Contest is seeking to inspire, promote and reward innovative talent in the field of film. We are asking filmmakers to adapt a scene or chapter from a book into a visually powerful live action or animated message. The book we are adapting is Burritos and Gasoline by Jamie Beckett. The storyline of this work of fiction lends itself to a wide variety of visual interpretations.

Shoot for drama, comedy, suspense, horror, romance or any combination you wish. Our only limitation being that you shoot with an “R” rating or lower as your guideline.

From a practical standpoint, the benefits of this novel to a filmmaker on a limited budget are the following:

  • Casting requires only a small number of actors.

  • Few of the locations require elaborate recreations.

  • No dramatic, expensive or potentially dangerous stunts are required to tell the story.

The Short Adaptation Film Contest commences on September 1, 2007. All submissions must be postmarked no later than midnight, March 21, 2008.

So fire up your imagination and get cracking! Your adaptation just might be the one our judges have been waiting for.

Entry forms, rules submission forms, guidelines and prize information are available at http://bookfilmcontest.com/.

Talk Radio for Authors

Francine Silverman will be Yvonne Perry’s guest on Writers in the Sky Podcast, September 7th, 2007!

Francine Silverman is a lifelong New Yorker who honed her writing skills as a newspaper reporter and freelance writer. She authored two travel guidebooks, Catskills Alive (2000 and 2003) and Long Island Alive (2003), both published by Hunter Publishing.

Part One of Our Two Week California Vacation

Every trip, vacation or family event can be worth writing about. Recently, I vacationed for two weeks in Palm Springs, California. I wrote twelve articles about what we did there and posted them on ezinearticles.com. Then, I turned it into an eBook.

If you would like to have the eBook to use as a gift to those who visit your Web site or blog, let me know and I will send it to you at no cost.

Here is the first article in the series.

We normally take our vacation on the east coast of the Florida peninsula, so we purchased one week of timeshare vacation on Ormond Beach. It was near the end of summer season in 2005, and we had already taken our vacation that year so we decided to space bank our week until later.

Later is 2007, and we combined our 2005 week with our 2007 week so could have a longer vacation in California. Usually it is difficult to get two weeks back-to-back when you swap through RCI, but low and behold they had availability in the Palm Springs area. We would have to swap from one condo resort to another after the first week, but it was only a few miles away so we took it and bought airline tickets online. Then, we settled down for a long winter's nap while waiting for our vacation date to roll around.

Finally, July 6th graced the calendar and we headed for the airport at 4:45 a.m. in a taxi. It had been a while since we had traveled via airplane. In fact, we had not been in an airport since before 9-11. We had heard that things had changed, but we didn't realize how much. Free curb-side baggage check was no longer free. Clerk-assisted baggage check-in is now self-check in using a computer that knows more than most humans. We had five bags we wanted to check, and three carry-ons. The limit was two bags of each kind per person. Looking at the bags, we didn't think any one of them would meet the carry-on size restrictions, but of course those limitations were not posted near the computer that was serving as our welcoming agent.

We paid the computer an extra $80 to check the fifth bag and then proceeded to the next early morning pre-boarding adventure. As we approached the person check, there was the sign we needed about 100 yards ago. We could have taken one of the bags on board. We were ordered to take off our shoes and put our carry on bags on the conveyor belt. All expect for the laptop and my purse; they had to be manhandled separately.

"You can't take a bottle of water on the plane," said the human void of personality.

We must have looked as dumbfounded as we felt. "It's just water. It hasn't been opened," I reported.

"No liquids over 3.5 ounces can be taken onboard. You can either drink it now, or throw it in the trash." She was serious.

I wasn't thirsty yet, so she pried the plastic containers from my hands and tossed both our brand new Aquafinas in the trash can behind her desk. Side note to terrorist: If you plan to bomb a plane, you must do it with less than 3.5 ounces of liquid, preferably not in a plastic water bottle.

Just inside the metal detector gate was a newsstand selling a wide variety of bottled water for two dollars each. Talk about seizing an opportunity.

Stay tuned for part two of a day-by-day diary of our 2-week California vacation.
